Visuals: The characters are well drawn. The animation has the habit to go wacky during more light-hearted moments with some hilarious facial expressions and goofy movements. There is this nice touch of adding a text that either explains a character’s name and ability, or amplifies on a comedic incident that just happened. It’s a small thing but it gives this series a unique addition to its style. Character designs are appealing through their often realistic style and 20s-50s outfit set against a modern-day city. I’ll give it 9/10 for visuals.
Audio and Sound: The ending track, however, performs better compared to the OP. The soundtrack was composed by Taku Iwasaki, it fits itself pretty well to situations presented to the Armed Detective Agency and never gets in the way. What I love about it is how rich in variety it can be, ranging from some goofy-sounding tunes to some pleasant jazzy stuff, it can also get pretty badass and energetic during action-oriented scenes, with rocky tunes. I’ll give 7.9/10 for audio and sound.
>Stray Dogs’s best component is its art and animation. It has a lot of references to words and books and authors. This series is unique because every character is based off of a famous author, and their superpower is based off of stories or poems that the real-life version of the author wrote.
>Speaking of the characters, Atsushi is the protagonist, but it’s Dazai who steals the show. Dazai,is an equally unconventional and mysterious detective with some hilarious suicidal jokes. His revolutionary methods, dark past and bipolar personality make him an unforgettable face.
>The whole plot is divided into, two seasons, with 12 episodes each, and a movie ‘Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple’ which is the sequel for the upcoming season.
>Stray Dogs obviously focuses more on Japanese authors. However, in the second season a group called the Guild is introduced, which is made up of various American and Canadian authors including F. Scott Fitzgerald and Mark Twain. The original author put a lot of work into designing characters based around Japanese authors. Each character is defined by a number of the original author’s works. However, this is not entirely true for H.P. Lovecraft, who is only defined by real-life Lovecraft's story. This is understandable it was his best known story, after all but Lovecraft wrote much more, so to see him portrayed as an awkward guy is a little bit disappointing. I totally loved it but I wish more had been done with him.
>In this series a huge amount of characters are introduced, and barely any of them get the screentime they deserve. Stray Dogs has some really good humor in it. Crazy slapstick jokes or unpredictable behavior by its cast. It also has some very strong drama, and intense action. In all fronts it is surprisingly decent. The things I didn’t liked in the series, fun story suffers from messy direction and execution, not enough characters get the focus or development they deserve, Dazai’s flashback was awkwardly-placed and messed up the pacing. What I loved about it is The insane amount of literary references and allusions, the interactions between the main characters, Dazai in particular is an awesome character, the fights, especially those towards the end of each season are amazing.
